La Femme Defense — FAQ

What is La Femme Defense?

1

It's the resource I wish existed when I started learning about firearms as a woman.

A place where women can learn about guns, personal safety, and self defense without feeling talked down to. Without the testosterone. Without pretending you already know things you don't.

I built La Femme Defense because I couldn't find it anywhere else. So here we are.

Do I have to be tough or athletic to learn to shoot?

2

No. And I say that as someone who was genuinely scared the first time I picked up a gun.

You don't need to be strong for firearms training for women beginners You don't need a background in anything. Women can learn to shoot just as well as anyone — my instructor told me women often learn faster. You just need to be willing to show up and practice. The rest comes with time. I promise.

What if I'm scared of guns?

3

Then you're in exactly the right place.

A lot of women who find La Femme Defense are scared. That's not a problem. That's actually a really healthy place to start. Fear means you're taking it seriously.

What I've found is that education is the thing that turns fear into confidence. The more you understand how firearms work and how to handle them safely the less intimidating they become.

Start with the basics. Take a lesson. Give it time. Read about my own first experience at the range here —

Will I look stupid at the range as a beginner?

4

I worried about this constantly when I first started shooting as a beginner.

Here's what I found. Most people at the range are genuinely supportive of new shooters. Nobody expects you to know everything on day one. And a good instructor will make sure you never feel embarrassed for not knowing something.

The only people who might make you feel stupid are the ones not worth listening to anyway.

Is La Femme Defense only for total beginners?

5

Not at all. But women who are brand new to firearms are absolutely my people.

I review firearms by skill level — from Absolute Newbie all the way to Advanced. So whether you've never touched a gun or you've been shooting for years there's something here for you.

If you're brand new though? Start with my Beginner's Guide. [Link to: Why There's No Rush to Buy Your First Gun.] This whole site was built with you in mind.

What is the best firearm for a woman to start with?

6

Honest answer: it depends on where you are in your training. And that’s exactly why I built my review system the way I did.

Most gun recommendations assume you’re already comfortable shooting. But a gun that feels great at six months in can feel completely overwhelming on day one. I know because I lived it.

So instead of giving you a list of “best guns for women” — which is mostly useless without context — every firearm review on La Femme Defense is rated by skill level. From Level 0 (never touched a gun, everything is overwhelming) all the way to Level 4 (experienced, trained, highly proficient).

That means when you’re brand new, you read the Level 0 reviews. You find out how a gun actually felt to someone who was exactly where you are. Not to an expert. Not to someone who forgot what beginner felt like.

To me. At that stage. Being honest about it.

That’s more useful than any spec sheet.

Do I need training before I buy a gun?

7

Yes. Full stop.

Find a qualified firearms instructor before you buy anything. A good instructor teaches you the four rules of firearm safety, builds your confidence, and helps you figure out what you actually need before you spend money on the wrong thing.

I took weekly lessons for months before I bought my first firearm. It was the best decision I made. The range I train at includes a free rental with every lesson which meant I got to try a ton of different guns without spending a cent.

Take the lessons first. Buy the gun later. Read more:

Is this site about tactical or military style training?

8

Not even a little.

La Femme Defense is about being thoughtfully prepared. That means practical firearms skills for real life. Responsible ownership. Building genuine confidence in a way that actually fits how you live.

No combat gear required. No military cosplay. Just honest information for women who want to feel safe and capable.

That's it.
